PMHNP Market Pulse

Your Monday schedule is full, but the waitlist is fuller—especially for 18–26-year-olds asking for “ASAP” evaluations, med adjustments, and school/work documentation.
We’re seeing the same pattern across markets: higher acuity, more comorbidity, and more follow-ups per patient—which changes how employers staff and how fast they hire.
THE QUICK TAKE
Demand is shifting younger—and it’s not “therapy-only.”
Employers are adding PMHNP capacity for Gen Z presentations that often include anxiety + depression + ADHD questions, sleep issues, substance use, and safety planning. That mix typically means more medication management touchpoints and tighter follow-up windows.
Telehealth is becoming the default front door.
Gen Z patients often prefer virtual access and quick scheduling. With 62% of roles remote-eligible, many teams are staffing intake-heavy virtual panels and reserving in-person slots for higher-risk cases and complex diagnostics.
Time-to-fill is still tight—so offers move faster.
Average time-to-fill is 32 days. When an employer is expanding to meet younger-patient volume, they’re less patient with long back-and-forth. If you’re open to a move, being “ready to interview” matters more than being “ready to start.”
Comp plans are following the follow-up burden.
As panels skew younger, employers pay closer attention to visit cadence, documentation load, and after-hours messaging. Salary ranges still cluster around $139K–$155K average, but the real difference shows up in support (MA/scribe), protected admin time, and no-show policies.
ONE NUMBER THAT MATTERS
Projected PMHNP job growth (2024–2034) is 35%. With Gen Z demand rising, that growth is showing up as more openings, faster hiring cycles, and more telehealth-first teams—not just “more patients.”
WHAT TO DO WITH THIS
This week, audit your “Gen Z load” questions before your next interview: ask about follow-up expectations (2–4 weeks?), after-hours messaging, and crisis pathways.
If you’re open to virtual work, prioritize roles with clear boundaries (response time policy) and real support (MA/scribe, centralized prior auth).

💬 Quick question:
In your practice, what’s the single biggest “Gen Z” driver of follow-ups right now—ADHD eval requests, med changes, sleep, or crisis/safety planning? Hit reply — we read every response and may feature yours (anonymously) next week.
